MOT View: BBC pundit is right - £50,000-a-wk player would be 'fantastic' Jan addition for Leeds
Leeds United could find themselves in need of a new forward in January and Southampton striker Che Adams could be a superb addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.
According to Football Insider, Leeds have registered their interest in the 23-year-old, who has struggled to hold down a regular spot in Southampton’s starting line-up since his summer move to the south coast from Birmingham.
It is understood there are doubts about whether Eddie Nketiah will be allowed to spend the rest of the season on loan at Elland Road from Arsenal due to the fact that he is yet to start a Championship fixture for the Whites.
If Arsenal do recall Nketiah – Adams would be a brilliant replacement.
That is a view shared by BBC Radio Leeds pundit Noel Whelan, who would clearly love to see the ex-Birmingham ace head to Elland Road in January.
“If that does come off then that’s a fantastic signing for Leeds, it really would be,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He was immense for Birmingham in a team that did not really have any superstars but Che Adams was a different class that season.
“Snapped up by Southampton, we know he can do it in the Championship, we know he’s got strength and pace, everything that you probably need to give you that added edge and that little bit extra over the other teams, is a Che Adams.
“That would be great if it actually comes off. It might just be talk, we don’t know. I’d be over the moon with that kind of signing.”
Adams may not have scored a goal since his £15million switch to Southampton in the summer – but he was certainly prolific for Birmingham in the Championship last season.
In 46 league appearances for Blues last term, the former Sheffield United striker scored 22 goals and supplied five assists.
Three of those goals came against Leeds as the West Midlands club won both home and away against the club that is now reportedly interested in him.
Leeds will need a new striker in January if Arsenal recall Nketiah and if £50,000-a-week Adams is available then he would definitely be someone who could help the Whites in their bid for promotion to the Premier League.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been linked with a Paris Saint-Germain striker.
