Out of nowhere, Leeds United appear to be closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente.
Sky Sports reported early on Tuesday that the Whites were in advanced negotiations with the Spaniard, and that a deal was close at Elland Road.
Phil Hay backed up those claims, reporting that Victor Orta has been in talks over a £20million deal which could be concluded before this weekend.
What sort of player will Leeds be bringing in?
Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague has shared his verdict on the Spanish international and it could prove that Orta is closing in on a masterclass.
“Diego Llorente is a very athletic CB who has played also as full-back and CM,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.
“Quality with his feet, struggled a bit as he played left of the two CB this season and a muscle problem in January. But he is a top player. Fantastic with long passing and comfortable with short.”
Balague went on to claim that Llorente is great in set-piece situations, both defending and attacking – an area that the Whites have really struggled in since Marcelo Bielsa arrived.
Based on this glowing verdict, we are excited over the prospect of this incoming signing.
Luis Enrique, the Spain international boss, is still a big admirer of the 27-year-old, and this move could see him join Rodrigo back in that set-up.
Llorente wins nearly 70% of his defensive duels and completes almost five interceptions per game according to WyScout – stats that will impress Bielsa.
The Spaniard’s only goal last season did come from a corner, with his movement causing great problems to the Villareal defence.
Llorente will add much-needed strength in depth at Elland Road in defence and will give Robin Koch and Liam Cooper competition which could solve our new-found leaky back four.
