MOT View: 28/yo should be furious with manager after Jan move to Leeds was reportedly rejected

Andre Gray was one of a number of centre-forward who were linked with a move to Leeds United in the January transfer window.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported in the winter window that Watford had rejected a loan proposal by Leeds as they pushed to sign the 28-year-old striker.

Leeds needed a new striker in January after Arsenal took the decision to recall Eddie Nketiah from his loan spell at Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa eventually signed Jean-Kevin Augustin from RB Leipzig but ex-Burnley forward Gray was clearly someone who Leeds pressed hard to sign – and it is clear why.

In 88 Championship appearances, Gray has scored 41 goals and given the fact he was hardly playing for Watford in the first half of the season, he was likely to be seen as a realistic signing at Elland Road.

However, Leeds failed in their bid to sign the Wolverhampton-born striker with Watford boss Nigel Pearson saying that he saw him as an important part of his squad at Vicarage Road.

But since the January transfer window closed with Watford rejecting Leeds’ advances, Gray has played just six minutes’ worth of football in all competitions.

Gray was an unused substitute four times in February and was only handed a small amount of game-time when he came off the bench against Crystal Palace for the final six minutes in March.

According to stats by WhoScored, Gray touched the ball just two times in his late appearance at Selhurst Park on March 7.

Since Pearson rejected Leeds’ approach for Gray because he wanted the striker to play a role in his squad, he’s played for six minutes, touched the ball just twice, only made one pass and hasn’t had a shot at goal.

Gray should be furious with Pearson for rejecting that approach.
