MOT Tactics: Fantastic stats show Leeds crushing Championship in November

November was a good month for Leeds United. Five wins, 11 goals scored and only two conceded.

Leeds aren’t top of the Championship but there’s a gap of five points down to third and that’s the most important thing.

Leeds beat their xG (expected goals) for the month too, scoring 11 from an xG of 8.62. [WyScout].

It means Leeds are still eight goals off where they should be (28/36) but it’s a step in the right direction.

There’s another brilliant stat from November that’s worth looking at – shots from open play in the box for and against.

Thanks to the LUFC Blog for highlighting this one with stats from Opta.

It shows that Leeds are absolutely crushing the Championship with a ratio of 87%. That comes from 45 shots from open play for Leeds and just seven against.

The next best team is Stoke with a ratio of 72% and then West Brom with 69%.

Next Saturday’s opponents Huddersfield have a ratio of 51% and Fulham, third in the table behind Leeds, are struggling on just 43%.

The Leeds defence – much talked about this season – is a huge part of this. We’re not conceding goals because we’re not giving opponents many big chances to score.

This time last season, Leeds were also second in the table to Norwich, had four points less and had conceded seven more goals.

However, it was around this time that Leeds went on their best run in a long time – seven consecutive wins starting from the end of November.

Leeds are on five at the moment and the game against Huddersfield is a very winnable one, if not easy. Then it’s Hull. Can we make it seven again?
