MOT Super Fans: Leeds 20y/o is the missing piece of the promotion puzzle

This is part of a regular series from our panel of Leeds United Super Fans. Each week, our Super Fans will deliver their verdicts on the biggest talking points and news stories around Elland Road and Thorp Arch

Tyler Roberts impressed again in the 2-1 win over Blackburn, which gave Leeds their fourth consecutive home win.

It begs the question, why hasn’t he been used more frequently this season? Yes, he has been blighted by injury during his relatively short Leeds career to date, but he is showing what we are missing in midfield in his absence.

Since the loss of Samu Saiz in January of 2019, Leeds have struggled for thrust and creativity in the centre of midfield. Costa, Harrison, Hernandez et al, provide a spark out wide at times. They contribute heavily to attempted dribbles against opposing full-backs. However, Leeds lack this inspiration and invention centrally.

Jamie Shackleton has shown real pace and ability to bypass players with ease at times, but it is Roberts who has best served in this role since Saiz’s departure. If Leeds are to harbour realistic expectations of a top-two finish I believe Roberts is a major factor. Potentially the missing piece in the puzzle.

Roberts’ well taken cool finish against QPR the previous matchday showed what the likes of Klich and Forshaw do not always contribute.

His ball to Ayling on Saturday was sublime and created an opportunity for him to shoot before he was clipped for the penalty.

In the closing stages against Blackburn, Roberts drove at the heart of their defence before laying the ball on a plate to Harrison in the left channel. These openings are no fluke – Roberts gives the side added spark and invention. His dynamism is the key to more goals for this team.

Leeds have been rock-solid defensively and hold the best defensive record in the top four divisions of English football, but we are only the 11th highest scorers in the league.

Roberts is key to improving that output.

A forward by trade who has since been moulded by Bielsa into a creative midfielder, I hope this becomes an extended run in the side.
