Live from Thorp Arch: Leeds first-team star has nightmare afternoon for the Under-23s

The debate at Leeds United surrounding Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah went out of the window many weeks ago.

It was no secret that the Arsenal loanee was about to start for the Whites in the 2-1 victory against Queens Park Rangers in November, but an injury forced him to wait.

That wait has continued ever since, and in his absence, Bamford has stepped up and more than cemented his spot in the Leeds side.

Nketiah completed yet another 45 minutes for the under 23s on Monday afternoon in the 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday.

It was a horror afternoon for the youngster. He was nowhere near good enough against the Owls, and Bielsa will not have been impressed.

The young poacher couldn’t hold the ball up and often lost possession in promising areas in the final third alongside Ryan Edmondson.

You could see the frustration all across Nketiah’s face after every mistake, and that’s no surprise given his quick decline at Elland Road in the past month.

We couldn’t believe that he had taken such a step backwards in the under-23s, and it only highlights how much of a long road he faces to start for the first team.

The Daily Mail recently reported that Arsenal are angry with Leeds, and are preparing to pull the plug on Nketiah’s loan deal due to a lack of playing time at Elland Road.

We know that there is a possibility of that happening. But, looking at the bigger picture – there is no chance that Bamford can be dropped at this moment.

The injury picked up by Nketiah in November has seriously halted his progress, an opportunity that has seen Bamford really cement his place.
