Leeds United: Wilfried Gnonto Instagram activity is strange as rumours circulate over Elland Road future

Before a ball was kicked this season, many had expected that Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto would be one of the Championship’s best players.

The 20-year-old had impressed in the Premier League and was the subject of plenty of transfer interest throughout the summer, even refusing to play in an attempt to try and force a move away from Elland Road.

But through a combination of injury, good form from other players and his actions in the summer, the Italian international has done very little for Daniel Farke’s side in the early stages of the season, only scoring and assisting once in 10 matches.

While Crysencio Summerville and Dan James are in some of the best form of their careers on either wing for Leeds, Gnonto has been forced to watch on from the bench and has been limited to cameo appearances late in matches, starting only once in the Championship since September.

Gnonto may have only scored twice last season in the Premier League, Leeds always looked a better side with him in it with his pace and agility on the ball constantly causing defenders problems and providing teammates with space to operate in.

In September he was part of Italy’s senior squad before he missed out on selection in the October international break with injury and for the November fixtures, he has been relegated to the Under-21s side, where he scored twice against San Marino.

With fixtures coming thick and fast in the run-up to Christmas, the 20-year-old is likely to be involved much more heavily on the other side of the November international break, but it is hard at the moment to imagine Farke preferring him over Summerville.

You have to wonder whether or not the winger is happy with his current situation at Leeds United and his Instagram activity is certainly making it appear as though he may want out of Elland Road.

When the Whites were in the Premier League, the 20-year-old seemed to consistently post photos of him in a Leeds shirt on his personal Instagram account, but following relegation to the Championship, the posts have become few and far between and typically involve Italy.

His last post in Leeds shirt came in February and since then the winger has uploaded six images on his account, with five of them featuring his time on international duty, both with the senior and Under-21 sides and the other being during his summer holiday.

Having been quiet on his account in recent weeks, the 20-year-old posted only a day after his display against San Marino, ensuring a photo of him captaining his national side was on his timeline, with comments limited to teammates mainly on the post.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with Gnonto’s obvious pride in playing for and representing his country, it seems odd that he has not posted about Leeds in such a long time. With the rumours still circulating about his future at Elland Road, it comes across as though he isn’t too fussed to be pulling on the white shirt at the moment.
