Leeds United should make smart move as Harry Winks trains away from first team

Leeds United have long been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, and they must try to secure his signing before the end of the window.

The Athletic’s Tottenham Hotspur reporter Charlie Eccleshare (via Give Me Sport, 3 August) reported that Leeds were mentioned in the discussion for Winks.

Sky Sports (via their transfer live blog; 9 August – 2:47pm) have reported that Winks is training away from the first at the moment, but there’s no concrete offer on the table.

It shows that Winks doesn’t have any future under Antonio Conte, and Spurs would be looking to let him go at all costs. At the moment, there hasn’t been any offer on the table, and it’s the perfect time for Leeds to make a smart move – either on loan or tempt Spurs with an agreeable bid.

The 26-year-old could be a smart addition for the Whites. Known for his ball retention abilities, he has got loads of Premier League experience, and he will be dying to get regular opportunities at the moment.

Winks is a one-dimensional player, and he only excels if the system is right. This is where he could be perfect for Leeds. Under Marcelo Bielsa, it was always high-octane football.

Under Jesse Marsch, the Whites do play an attacking brand of football, but they are more compact in possession and midfielders seldom leave the defence brutally exposed.

The Whites have bolstered their midfield this summer, despite losing Kalvin Phillips. The team will get stronger when Adam Forshaw returns, but Winks could still play a part in this system.

Moreover, there is uncertainty over the future of Mateusz Klich and Marsch has refused to confirm that they would stay at the club beyond the summer.

Leeds have an opportunity here to secure a smart deal for Winks, and they must secure his signature.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites now want to sign this striker with a rival set to kickstart a major £30million+ transfer battle
