Leeds United must axe Diego Llorente after shocking statistic emerges
Leeds United need to get rid of centre-back Diego Llorente after a shameful statistic has emerged in one key defensive area.
The Premier League is notorious for its physicality and those who aren’t up to the task simply won’t be successful.
The Spaniard had the worst areal duel success rate out of all of the defenders in the league with 43.9% which is shocking enough to see him feature in WhoScored’s ineffective Premier League XI.
Last season was bad for a number of uncontrollable reasons but one thing is for sure, the Whites could have been a hell of a lot better at the back.
Conceding 79 goals – the second-most in the league behind Norwich – saw Jesse Marsch’s side come dangerously close to relegation and if the Elland Roaders want to avoid a similar season next year, things have to change.
Jekyll & Hyde.
Make no mistake, Llorente is a great footballer but his defending ability has come under much scrutiny at times.
He is one of the more composed players on the ball that allow Leeds to play out from the back but he leaves them dangerously vulnerable at the back.
All a team would have to do is put there on the former Real Sociedad ace and they are almost guaranteed to win the majority of areal duels.
In a league like the Premier League where physicality is everything that simply isn’t good enough.
No wonder the Whites suffered such a torrid time defending set-pieces last season.
The good news is that Marsch has the whole summer to fix the plethora of issues in the squad. Staying in the topflight was absolutely huge as the American looks to not only keep hold of his best players but make key additions ahead of next season.
