Leeds United must act quickly as Sekou Mara close to joining Southampton
Leeds United will have to move quickly now if they are serious about landing Bordeaux striker Sekou Mara.
According to journalist, Clement Carpentier, who works for 20 Minutes, Mara is close to joining Southampton.
Carpentier wrote on Twitter on 21 July that the Saints have made an offer to Bordeaux to sign the 19-year-old, thought to be in the region of £9.3m upfront and a further £1.7m in bonuses.
He wrote on Twitter: Sekou Mara to Southampton FC. Bordeaux have accepted the English club’s offer on Wednesday: 11M (+2M bonus) + 10% on resale! The promising 19-year-old striker (7 goals in L1) will sign 5 years with the Saints.”
The French club have accepted an offer, but that doesn’t mean that Leeds and others are completely out of the race. The Whites have come up with a better offer as well and gazump the deal.
Foot Mercato reported on 20 July that the Whites are interested in signing the young striker.
This has been a massive transfer window for the Whites, with the Yorkshire club adding as many as six new faces. But, there could be more signings to follow.
Jesse Marsch needs to add a new striker to bolster the attack and provide competition for Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt this season, and the Whites need to act quickly if they want to land the youngster.
Mara scored six goals in Ligue 1 last season as Bordeaux were relegated down to Ligue 2. He is a talented young forward, but Leeds probably could be looking at more experienced strikers.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites can sign this “excellent” left-back for £20million.
