Leeds United can kiss goodbye to January target Raphael Guerreiro after stunning World Cup performance

Leeds United target Raphael Guerreiro started and scored for Portugal on Tuesday evening as they demolished Switzerland 6-1 in the World Cup.

Leeds are desperately on the lookout for a new left-back in January. Junior Firpo has been awful since joining the Whites from Barcelona, and while Pascal Struijk has filled in well this season, it’s certainly not his natural position.

According to TeamTalk, Leeds viewed Borussia Dortmund left-back Guerreiro as the “ideal fit” to solve their left-back issues.

The 28-year-old full-back is out of contract in the summer, and while Dortmund are keen to agree upon a new deal, the Portuguese international is well aware of interest from the Premier League.

As reported by TeamTalk’s Graeme Bailey, Guerreiro “is going to get through the World Cup finals and then assess the situation.”

However, Guerreiro’s World Cup performances so far will have contract offers flying in from across the globe. He featured in two of three group-stage games and was then handed a start in the round-of-16 clash against Switzerland ahead of Joao Cancelo.

It was a decision that raised eyebrows, but Guerreiro rewarded manager Fernando Santos with a superb performance and a goal just before the hour mark.

When Guerreiro returns from Qatar he’ll likely find the Leeds United contract offer buried at the bottom of and endless pile of offers.

As much as Leeds can offer Premier League football and regular game time, Guerreiro will now likely end up at a top European club either in January or next summer when his deal expires.

Guerreiro can join Cody Gakpo in a list of Leeds transfer targets that have become unattainable thanks to their World Cup campaigns.
