Journalist gets it wrong on future of Leeds United ace Illan Meslier, ‘hefty fee’ unlikely after Elland Road development

There will definitely be a massive shake-up at Leeds United this summer after the club were relegated from the Premier League.

Issues had been bubbling beneath the surface all season, with those problems now escalated after the very unwanted drop to the Championship.

It could, however, serve as a much-needed wake-up call, meaning issues like the appointment of a new manager and director of football, and of course the impending takeover, could be accelerated.

Success in these areas will ensure a much smoother ride at Elland Road next season, with players then able to get on with their job without any distractions.

The Whites will no doubt delve into the summer transfer window to help improve results on the pitch, but they are also set to lose several senior players over the coming months.

And one star that could be among the first to go is goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who was dropped by Sam Allardyce for the last few matches of the season due to his poor form between the sticks.

The youngster certainly impressed in his early stages at Elland Road, but too many mistakes cost him his place in the starting XI, and now potentially at the club.

Meslier’s earlier displays could, however, result in a swift return to the top flight, with Leeds Live journalist Matty Hewitt noting: “His poor form this season has not deterred any interest and the general consensus from supporters is that he – along with many others – will leave Elland Road this summer for a hefty fee.”

While a top club could come in for the French goalkeeper, the current circumstances mean it won’t involve a “hefty fee” whatsoever.

The fact Leeds have gone down means a large chunk of any potential big figure will be sliced off, coupled with the fact the Whites conceded a league-high 78 goals this season, as per the official Premier League website.

With Joel Robles in goal for the final few games, Meslier of course isn’t the only reason behind that figure, but it will no doubt bring down his value some more.

In other Leeds United news, one football finance expert believes an announcement regarding a Whites takeover is close, with owner Andrea Radrizzani rumoured to be buying Sampdoria.
