Joe Gelhardt ready for Leeds first-team debut after England U20 masterclass
Leeds United have enjoyed an excellent international break with their first-team and academy stars shining yet again.
Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips are making names for themselves with the England squad, with two 4-0 wins in the bag.
They aren’t the only ones shining for the Three Lions, with their under-20s featuring four Leeds players from our academy.
Joe Gelhardt started on the bench, but he was the one to make all the headlines on Monday afternoon.
Sam Greenwood, Lewis Bate and Cody Drameh all shined as they swept aside Romania by six goals to one.
The young striker scored twice and early signs were that he had grabbed a hat-trick, but his third was taken away.
Footage emerged on Twitter of one of his goals, and it showed his confidence as he smashed home a penalty with ease.
Marcelo Bielsa will be watching all of his players carefully, after all, he takes great personal pride watching them shine on this level.
Gelhardt has been knocking on the door for nearly a year now, and this level of performance will only help that cause.
He is scoring with ease at this level, and no one is saying that he will be replacing Bamford anytime soon, but he surely has to come off the bench.
The young forward alongside the likes of Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville is part of one of the most promising front threes in England right now.
It may not be against Liverpool on Sunday, but Gelhardt is certainly getting closer to his senior debut – he is ready.
