Illan Meslier responding to Leeds United summer transfer saga in best possible way

Not so long ago, it seemed that Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier was definitely heading for the exit door at Elland Road.

The player was bereft of confidence after being dropped by Sam Allardyce in the final stages of last season, replaced by the more experienced Joel Robles.

Robles has since moved on, but the Whites wasted no time in bringing in a new shot-stopper, with Karl Darlow joining the club in the summer transfer window.

In that window, The Athletic (6 September) reported that the West Yorkshire club were expecting the 23-year-old to depart, which ultimately did not happen.

Having lost his number one spot, Meslier was not going to miss out on a starting spot under new manager Daniel Farke.

And that has been the case in the club’s six Championship matches so far, with Meslier playing 90 minutes in all six of those games.

The Frenchman will have been disappointed to have conceded seven times from the first four of those matches, but he has bounced back in perfect fashion in the last two matches, keeping clean sheets against both Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall.

Against the Lions on Sunday (17 September), the number one really was in top form, with three saves, two punches and two high claims, while he was successful in 100% of his runs out (two out of two), as per SofaScore.

That summer signature of Darlow, who was utilised in the two EFL Cup matches last month, has undoubtedly helped Meslier raise his standards at the Elland Road club.

In other Leeds United news, one summer signing has immediately repaid the faith as his superb August Championship statistics emerge.
