Gonzalo Plata can catch Leeds United attention with strong performance in Ecuador v Senegal clash

Ecuador will take on Senegal in the crucial Group A match in the World Cup, and Leeds United scouts will keep an eye on Gonzalo Plata once again.

A win or a draw for Ecuador will take them into the next round, and Plata will be hoping to make a big impact.

Plata has played in both group games for Ecuador so far and has done reasonably well.

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs said to Give Me Sport (28 November) that Leeds have scouted him and have kept him on their long-term radar.

The Whites were heavily linked with a move for him when he was on Sporting CP’s books. After a season out on loan at Real Valladolid, the 22-year-old joined them permanently in the summer. But it seems, the Whites are still keeping tabs on him.

A strong performance tonight will definitely catch Leeds’ attention, and the Yorkshire club could be interested in making a move for him either in January or next summer.

Plata is a pacey right winger who is also capable of playing as a striker if needed. He has managed two assists in La Liga this season but has impressed heavily in the World Cup.

Against the Netherlands, he registered 92.9% passing accuracy and had one attempt at goal, as per Who scored.

Left Back Football described his qualities in May 2022 and wrote “The timing of his runs, occupation of space and the way he adapts to movements of teammates, opposition defenders and situations in order to move into high quality areas inside the opposition box is phenomenal.”

Leeds need to bolster their forward options, and Plata could be a fantastic replacement for Daniel James, who is currently out on loan and doesn’t appear to be in Jesse Marsch’s first-team plans.

He has got tremendous pace like James which is needed to create chances, especially on the counter, but Plata does have the intelligence to pick the right passes.

Marsch can use him in various roles and can make him play more centrally. Leeds could be really interested in him in January if he makes a big impact today in the World Cup.

There is no better stage to prove your talents than the World Cup, and certainly, a strong performance will get the scouts excited. He is young, talented, and definitely has the potential to shine at Elland Road.
