Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher wrongly omit Stuart Dallas from PL team of the year

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville failed to name a single Leeds United player in their respective selection for the Premier League team of the year.

In typical Sky Sports fashion, the pair filled their teams with players made up from ‘Big Six’ clubs, overlooking clubs like Leeds and Leicester.

Naturally, the likes of Harry Kane and Bruno Fernandes were included, while Ruben Dias was picked by both as the player of the season.

But we cannot help but feel they have made a mistake by ignoring Leeds’ contribution to the season, particularly Stuart Dallas.

The 29-year-old has been described by Danny Mills as”outstanding” [Football Insider] in what is his debut Premier League season.

That fact is now quite difficult to believe given how good he has been on a consistent basis.

The Northern Ireland international has eight goals and two assists this term, including a double in the win at Manchester City.

He has been electric in the middle of the park and has surely contributed more than N’Golo Kante or Ilkay Gundogan, who have just 23 and 21 starts respectively.

Other than a purple patch around the new year Neville’s pick Gundogan has not been better than Dallas, especially as he is playing with the best players in the league.

Dallas has stood out on the wing and at left-back this season too, a feat no other player can boast of, not even James Milner.

He deserves credit for his contribution in multiple areas, and his ability not to drop below a certain level of performance even in testing circumstances.

Dallas is a shoe-in for Leeds player of the year but could be rivalled by Illan Meslier, who has improved considerably, or Raphinha.

The Brazilian has added real flair to the team and has excited the Premier League at times, but apparently not enough to be in contention for signing of the season.

Tomas Soucek was given that honour by Carragher despite first joining West Ham in January 2020.

Neville, meanwhile, somehow chose Edinson Cavani – we wonder why.

We just do not understand the pundits at Sky Sports sometimes.
