Things could have been worked out very differently for Leeds United last summer.
We were very interested in signing Said Benrahama until the Brentford player made the fateful mistake of posting a video from his luxury holiday.
That rang alarm bells with Marcelo Bielsa, who was turned off and decided Benrahma wouldn’t fit in the Leeds dressing room.
Before that, Athletic journalist Phil Hay had said, “Benrahma, he’s the one. If they [Leeds] could get him they would be delighted and they would do it.”
After his video landed, Hay said, “Leeds do rate Benrahma but have gone slightly cold on him. I don’t think that Twitter post of his gave off the right message in terms of how he might fit into the dressing room.”
Benrahma has since deleted the tweet.
It’s side before self at Leeds and Bielsa has striven to keep his players grounded and humble.
Victor Orta moved onto another target and we signed Raphinha for £17m from Rennes.
Take that in. £17m for Raphinha in a summer when West Ham paid £21m for Benrahma and Sheffield United paid £24m for Rhian Brewster.
Benrahma hasn’t done much at West Ham to justify his huge fee.
Raphinha, on the other hand, has got everyone talking and is already being linked with a move to Liverpool.
Sometimes, the stars have to align for things to come together in the transfer market.
Raphinha obviously wasn’t our first choice but he’s now proved to be the very best signing we made in an impressive summer of business.
Dominic Matteo has predicted that he can go to the very top of the game.
And we’ve got Benrahma’s home video to thank for him.
