Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at the prospect of Gaetano Berardi returning to the club.
The centre-back’s contract at Elland Road expired this summer, while his role in last season’s promotion push was cut cruelly short by a severe ACL injury in the latter stages of the Championship campaign.
But the veteran defender has seemingly hinted that he could be on his way back to the Whites in the coming weeks.
Speaking to RSI Sport in Switzerland, he said: “I go walking a lot but it’s going well, even if it will be a long recovery.
“At the end of September I should go back to England to define everything and still stay at Leeds.”
By the sounds of it, Berardi is in little doubt as to where his future lies.
The 32-year-old knows Leeds better than most, and made 155 appearances for the club including 13 in the Championship last season.
He may not have been the most eye-catching player in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad, but he put himself on the line when it counted, so much so that he suffered his injury after the point at which he was initially supposed to become a free agent.
That commitment speaks volumes, and in a season that could prove to be the toughest we have faced in a long while, we could use a warrior or two in the dressing room.
We would be over the moon if Berardi came back to Leeds.
Here are some of the best tweets from supporters:
Brilliant, he will be a strong addition to the squad coming up against some of the tricky strikers. MOT.

Yes, I do. He's been a faithful servant of LUFC, and he'll continue to be, albeit as a backup to the regulars.
