Leeds United show incredible transfer strength with handling of Raphinha
Leeds United have shown incredible transfer strength with their handling of star man Raphinha amid increasing reports regarding his Elland Road exit.
Barcelona have been in for the Brazil international for quite some time but the Whites have dug their heels in to keep him.
In years gone by the west Yorkshire side would have wilted under the pressure but they have stood firm against the Catalonian giants, to say the least.
“For Raphinha, negotiations between Barcelona and his agents have advanced since February but the €25m [£21.3] clause will not be activated because Leeds are staying in the Premier League,” Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside Column.
“Leeds are now asking for €55m guaranteed and not paid in many instalments, which is why the deal has slowed down.”
He added: “Personally, I think Raphinha is great to watch and he could be a great fit for Xavi’s project, but if things continue to stall there, it might be worth watching to see if he stays in the Premier League.”
Leeds have done excellently in taking the fight this far, they really have.
Once a European powerhouse sets its sights on a player, there often isn’t a great deal a club like the Whites can do to stop them but this is looking to be somewhat of a David v Goliath type story.
At first, the fight seemed to be all about keeping the scintillating winger to maximise Jesse Marsch’s chances of success next season but it has taken somewhat of a twist since January.
Leeds clearly want as much money as possible for the player but that might not be worth things getting ugly.
If Raphinha forces a move, that would almost certainly see the fans turn on the Brazilian despite his massive impact since coming to the club – they most likely wouldn’t be in the Premier League without him.
He has been a brilliant servant but all good things must come to an end – let him go with his head held high and use the vast fee that will be acquired to reinvest back into the squad.
