Finance Expert reacts as Leeds United set to review SBOTOP deal after government action

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the complex government action behind gambling sponsorships will see Leeds United and other clubs target short-term deals.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Whites are ready to review their £6million per season agreement with SBOTOP as the White Paper action gets closer this year.

The finance expert admitted that it will be tricky to find a similar agreement as gambling deals tend to be the biggest ones in the market.

“You’ve obviously got the complexities of the government action,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“I think if clubs are going to look to stay with gambling partners until something breaks officially, you will see more short-term deals so it won’t be any longer than a season to allow them to react.

“Likewise, if you’re looking into a different market, you’re trying to get at least parity on that deal if not a little bit more, that’s tricky, it’s not easy to do based on the numbers we’ve seen historically outside of the big six clubs, those gambling deals tend to be the biggest ones in the market.

“There is a bit of strategy redevelopment to look at and how you can look at capitalising on the other markets but also, you’re after at least parity, if not a little more moving forward and diversifying into new markets is the key thing that all clubs are looking at as well.”

This will certainly be one to watch over the coming months with changes set to be all over the Premier League given how many gambling sponsors there actually are.

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
